Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps

  • Author: Christine
  • Total Time: 30 min.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Filling:

    • 1 lb ground turkey
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 packet taco seasoning (or use homemade seasoning)
    • 1/2 cup water (or chicken broth for extra flavor)
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • Salt and pepper, to taste

    For the Wraps:

    • 8 large lettuce leaves (butter lettuce, iceberg, or Romaine work best)
    • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
    • 1 cup diced tomatoes
    • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
    • 1/2 avocado, diced
    • 1/4 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt (optional)
    • Salsa or hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Turkey

  1. Sauté the Onions and Garlic: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute.
  2. Brown the Turkey: Add the ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook for 6-8 minutes, or until browned and cooked through.
  3. Season the Meat: Sprinkle the taco seasoning over the turkey and mix well. Add the water (or broth) and stir to combine. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 2: Prepare the Lettuce Wraps

  1. Prepare the Lettuce: While the turkey is cooking, carefully wash and dry the lettuce leaves. If using Romaine or iceberg lettuce, you may need to trim the edges to create cups that will hold the filling.

Step 3: Assemble the Wraps

  1. Fill the Lettuce Cups: Spoon the turkey mixture into each lettuce leaf, filling them generously.
  2. Add the Toppings: Top with shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, avocado, cilantro, and a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt if desired. Finish off with a drizzle of salsa or hot sauce for a spicy kick.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Serve Immediately: Arrange the lettuce wraps on a plate and serve them right away while the turkey mixture is warm.
