Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium red cabbage, thinly sliced
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 apple, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup water or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
Instructions
Prep the Ingredients
- Slice the Cabbage: Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and slice it thinly. This will help it cook evenly and absorb all the flavors.
- Slice the Onion and Apple: Thinly slice the onion and apple, and set them aside with the cabbage.
Add to the Slow Cooker
- Layer the Vegetables and Apple: In your slow cooker, layer the sliced cabbage, onion, and apple.
- Add the Liquid: Pour in the apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and water (or vegetable broth). Sprinkle with salt, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves if using.
- Mix to Combine: Stir everything gently to combine the flavors, ensuring the cabbage is well coated.
Cook the Cabbage
- Set the Slow Cooker: Cover and cook on low for 4 hours, or until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have melded together.
- Stir Occasionally: If you have time, stir the cabbage halfway through cooking, but it’s not necessary.
